The Green Island National Park (English: Green Island National Park ) is a national park in the northeast of the Australian state of Queensland .

location

It is 1,394 kilometers northwest of Brisbane and 27 kilometers off the coast of Cairns .

The Michaelmas and Upolu Cays and Fitzroy Island national parks are in the vicinity .

history

The local Aboriginesstamm the Gungganyji used the island as a place for initiation rites. It has been a popular tourist destination for over 100 years. In 1937 it was declared a national park. In 1974 a marine park was established around the island and since 1981 it has been part of the Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Site.

National nature

Green Island is a 7.93 acre coral island in the Great Barrier Reef that has been built up from the deposition of dead coral over thousands of years on the leeward side of a platform reef. It is one of the most visited in this world natural heritage .

Flora and fauna

The island is covered with tropical rainforest . Many bird and insect species can be found there. Around the island, on the reef, there are many corals, shells, fish, stingrays and other marine life. Green turtles and hawksbill turtles can be seen off the island's beaches. More than 60 species of birds are native to Green Island.

Facilities

Camping is not permitted on the island. However, a small luxury resort was built that is served by ferries every day. There is a 1.3-kilometer paved hiking trail on the island, various picnic areas, telephones and toilets.
