The Conway National Park (English: Conway National Park ) is a national park in the east of the Australian state of Queensland .

location

It is located 911 kilometers northwest of Brisbane and 90 kilometers northwest of Mackay .

Terrain forms

The coastal mountain range of the Conway Range rises steeply behind the coastal settlements of Airlie Beach, Cannonvale, and Cannon Valley and covers the peninsula that forms the park. Nevertheless, the development of the three coastal settlements endangers the existence of the national park.

The Whitsunday Islands , just off the coast of the Conway Peninsula, used to be the northeastern part of these mountains. However, when the sea level rose, it sank into the coral sea a few thousand years ago , so that only the islands remained.

Flora and fauna

The park is covered with dense tropical coastal rainforest . It is the largest rainforest of its kind outside of Queensland's tropical areas. There is also sparse forest with myrtle heather and grass trees , as well as mangroves .

Bush and Reinward chickens live in the forests .

Culture

The land was formerly settled by the Aboriginal tribes of the Ngaro and Gia , who roamed through the thick forests.

Facilities and access

There are numerous hiking trails. Camping in the park (with an individual permit) is permitted, but there are no tent sites.

The park is accessible from the Bruce Highway ( Proserpine South exit ). The road to Airlie Beach is 16 miles. From there, a 6.5-kilometer road leads southeast to the entrance on the north side of the park.
