The Newry Islands National Park (English: Newry Islands National Park ) is a national park in the east of the Australian state of Queensland . It is 847 kilometers northwest of Brisbane and 45 kilometers northwest of Mackay .

Eight islands belong to the national park. In addition to the main island of Newry Island , these are Rabbit Island , Outer Newry Island , Acacia Island , Mausoleum Island , North Red Cliff Island , South Red Cliff Island and Rocky Island . All islands are part of the Great Barrier Reef UNESCO World Heritage Site .

The Smith Islands , Repulse Islands and Brampton Islands National Parks are in the vicinity .

history

Newry Island was home to one of the first resort islands in the area. It was in operation from the early 1920s until 2001.

National nature

The small islands are covered by light forest and dense tropical rainforest , near the coast you will find pearly white sandy beaches and rocky capes.

Facilities

There are a number of tent sites that have been set up, but reservations are necessary for them. Picnic areas are on Newry Island, Outer Newry Island, and Rabbit Island. They are provided with toilets, picnic tables and canopies. Open fires are prohibited on Newry Island and Outer Newry Island.

The islands can only be reached by private boats. A slipway is at Seaforth .
