The Hinchinbrook Island National Park (English: Hinchinbrook Island National Park ) is a national park in the northeast of the Australian state of Queensland .

location

It is located 1,240 kilometers northwest of Brisbane and 30 kilometers northeast of Ingham on the Cassowary Coast .

At 404 square kilometers, Hinchinbrook Island is Australia's largest island national park.

In the neighborhood are the national parks Goold Island , Brook Islands , Orpheus Island and Halifax Bay Wetlands .

history

Before the arrival of the Europeans, this area was inhabited by the Bandjin Aboriginal people for thousands of years . They left behind a variety of stone traps and køkkenmøddinger made from shells that can still be found all over the island today.

National nature

The island on the continental shelf is very mountainous inside. It is separated from the mainland by the Hinchinbrook Canal . There the island slopes gently, while in the east it has rocky capes and sandy bays.

Flora and fauna

In the often foggy and humid interior of the country, the mountains are covered with heathland. There are also spots in the rainforest and eucalyptus forest . Mangrove forests grow especially on the west coast , while palm trees can be found on the beaches of the east coast .

Green turtles and dugongs live in the coral reefs around the island .

Facilities and access

Camping on Hinchinbrook Island is permitted but must be registered for a fee. The Thorsborne Trail (named after the naturalists Margaret and Arthur Thorsborne ) is a 4-day hike across the island.

The island, 8 kilometers from the coast, can only be reached by private boats or water taxis.
