The Tully Falls National Park (English Tully Falls National Park ) is a 168 square kilometer national park in Queensland , Australia . Due to a wide variety of bird species endemic to Queensland's humid tropics , the park is part of the Wooroonooran Important Bird Area and the Wet Tropics of Queensland UNESCO World Heritage Site .

location

The park is located in the North Queensland region , about 60 kilometers west of Innisfail and 90 kilometers southwest of Cairns . The Tully Gorge , Wooroonooran , Japoon and Koombooloomba National Park are in the immediate vicinity. The park can be reached by vehicle via the 10 km long Tully Falls Road, which branches off the Kennedy Highway at Ravenshoe .

description

The Tully Falls (dt .: Tully waterfalls ) only carry water in the rainy season , but the 300 meter high walls of rocks and rainforest down to the Tully River are a delightful sight all year round. The park's various vegetation zones feature a wide variety of animals including the column gardener and the rare Lumholtz tree kangaroo . In addition to designated hiking trails, there are also camping facilities in the park.

history

Already from the first settlers until 1988, when the area was declared a World Heritage Site, wood was felled that was processed by the local sawmills around Ravenshoe. In the steeper parts of the park, however, this was impossible, so pristine rainforest can still be seen here today. Initially designated as Ravenshoe State Forest , the park was declared a Tully Falls Forest Reserve on September 14, 2001 and finally a national park on December 16, 2005.
