The bird sanctuary encompasses a large part of the rainforests of Australia, which extends south from Port Douglas further towards Cairns to Lucinda . It is dominated by the two granite mountains Mount Bartle Frere (1622 m) and Mount Bellenden Ker (1593 m), which are the highest peaks in northern Australia.

Large parts of the area were developed earlier, the impacts have remained relatively minor and the ecological integrity has largely remained intact.

Numerous protected areas are located or overlap in the reserve, including Barron Gorge National Park , Danbulla National Park , Dinden National Park , Girringun National Park , Japoon National Park , Kirrama National Park , Kuranda National Park , Malaan National Park , Mowbray National Park , Murray Upper National Parks , Tully Gorge National Parks, and Wooroonooran National Parks .

Flora and fauna

The area was of BirdLife International for Important Bird Area declared (IBA) because it has a large population of this protection zone Helmkasuaren are.
