Ziggy Stardust is a 1972 song written by David Bowie that appeared on the album The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars . The inspiration for the name Stardust came from the Legendary Stardust Cowboy . On the list of the 500 greatest songs of all time of Rolling Stone 's Ziggy Stardust listed at No. 277th
Live versions
- Bowie recorded the song for the BBC radio program "Sounds of the 70s: Bob Harris " on January 1, 1972. The first broadcast was on February 7, 1972. On May 16, 1972 Bowie played the song again on "Sounds of the 70s: John Peel ", this broadcast took place on May 23, 1972. These two versions were in 2000 on the Bowie album at the Beeb released.
- A live version was recorded on October 20, 1972 at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium and released on the Santa Monica '72 album. This version also appeared on the Japan release of RarestOneBowie .
- On the album Ziggy Stardust: The Motion Picture , a version was released that was played during the famous concert at Hammersmith Odeon in London on July 3, 1973.
- A recording from the Philadelphia Spectrum from April 28-29, 1978 ("Heroes" Tour) was released on the album Stage . This live version can also be found on the B-side of the 1978 single " Breaking Glass ".

The British gothic rock band Bauhaus recorded a version of "Ziggy Stardust" as their eighth single. The single was released in October 1982 on the Beggars Banquet Records label and reached number 15 in the UK charts . The B-side is a Brian Eno cover. It was released in 7 "and 12" formats by Beggars Banquet. The 12 "version contains the Velvet Underground cover" I'm Waiting for the Man " as an additional live track .
