Ziggy Stardust: The Motion Picture Soundtrack , is a live album by the English musician David Bowie , which was released in October 1983 at the same time as the film of the same name Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars . The music was recorded during the Ziggy Stardust Tour at Hammersmith Odeon in London Chiswick on July 3, 1973, although the album was only released by RCA Records in 1983 . Before that, it had existed in the form of a bootleg . Entitled: Bowie and the Spiders From Mars - Last Stand: His Masters Voice .

The album documents the last show that David Bowie performed in his alter ego as Ziggy Stardust . Shortly before the last piece he announced: “Of all the shows on this tour, this particular show will stay with us the longest, because it's not only the last show on the tour, but also the last we'll ever do. Thanks. ”Many in the audience believed that Bowie was withdrawing himself from music.

Production and publication

DA Pennebaker filmed the concert. It was recorded by RCA Records with the intention of releasing a live album. However, the project was suspended for a variety of reasons, including Bowie's desire to leave Ziggy behind and the poor quality of the recordings. On the grounds that sooner or later RCA would release the material anyway, Bowie and producer Tony Visconti mixed the recordings in 1981. This mixture has been heavily criticized, although Visconti describes it as "more of a salvage operation than an artistic endeavor" given the condition of the source material.

The album was finally released in October 1983 as a double album , LP and soundtrack to Pennebaker's documentary. Due to the limitations of the LP record format, several songs from the original tapes were omitted, shortened, or rearranged when they were released. White Light / White Heat was released as a single in November.

Publications

"Ziggy Stardust": The Motion Picture has appeared twice on CD; the first time on 1992 by Rykodisc . In April 2003 the 30th Anniversary 2CD set by EMI / Virgin was released. Remixed by Visconti, it was seen as a significant improvement over the original. It contains additional material including introductions, spoken passages, and the full version of Width of a Circle. Changes was also put in the correct place in the order of the original concert, according to Moonage Daydream . The encore of The Jean Genie / Love Me Do and Round and Round with Jeff Beck is still missing. The lack of Beck's sequence has been attributed in a number of ways, to a royalty issue or to the feeling of the guitarist who, as Tony Visconti said, "didn't fit into the movie."
