The Hammersmith Apollo is a concert and events venue in the London borough of Hammersmith at Queen Caroline Street London, W6 9QH. The hall offers 5039 standing places and 3632 seats. The architect of the Art Deco building was Robert Cromie.
history
The building was opened on March 28, 1932 and was used as a cinema under the name " Gaumont Palace". In 1946 the addition “Palace” was deleted. In 1962 the hall was named "Hammersmith Odeon" ( also known as "Hammy-O" in colloquial language ), under which it became known worldwide.
After a renovation in the early 1990s, the hall was named "Labatt's Apollo" as part of a sponsorship agreement with the Canadian brewery Labatt . During this period, the four-manual Compton cinema organ from 1932 was removed and stored.
From 2000 to 2002 the hall was called "London Apollo". In 2002 the British brewery Carling took over the contract and the name was changed accordingly to "Carling Apollo Hammersmith". Since 2006 the hall was initially run as the "Hammersmith Apollo". In 2006 it was decided, on the initiative of Hammersmith & Fulham Council and the Cinema Theater Association, to restore the dismantled organ and put it back into operation. A year later the hall was transferred to the MAMA Group. At the beginning of 2009, the HMV Group founded a joint venture with MAMA. The hall was now called "HMV Hammersmith Apollo". The event building was sold by the HMV Group to AEG Live and CTS Eventim in May 2012 . In 2013 it was closed and extensively renovated. The renovation work was carried out by the architect Foster Wilson. On September 7th, 2013 the hall was reopened as Eventim Apollo with a concert by Selena Gomez .
Use as a concert hall
Not least because of the live album No Sleep 'til Hammersmith by the heavy metal band Motörhead , the hall became world famous as a venue for rock concerts. The title was only an allusion to the reputation of the Hammersmith Apollo as a legendary concert venue, the recordings for the album were mostly made in Leeds and Newcastle during the "Short, Sharp, Pain in the Neck" tour in 1981.
Artists who performed at the Hammersmith Apollo include Status Quo , Judas Priest , Genesis , The Who , Queen , AC / DC , Nazareth , Dire Straits , Iron Maiden , Frehley's Comet , Slipknot , Scorpions , Black Sabbath , Metallica , The Cult , The Cure , Bruce Springsteen , Crowded House , Joe Bonamassa and Whitesnake . The Odeon became particularly famous for David Bowie's last appearance as Ziggy Stardust on July 3, 1973.
