Zembra ( Arabic زمبرة Zimbra orالجامور الكبير / al-Ǧāmūr al-kabīr ) is an island in the Mediterranean Sea and belongs to Tunisia . Together with the neighboring island of Zembretta, 4.8 km to the east-southeast and only two hectares in size ( Arabic زمبرتا Zimbrittā orالجامور الصغير / al-Ǧāmūr aṣ-ṣaġīr ) the islands administratively belong to the Nabeul governorate . Until 1976 the islands were used as a natural fortress by the Tunisian army, since January 1977 both islands have been a biosphere reserve , and since April 1977 also a Tunisian national park .
geography
Zembra is located 11 kilometers northwest of the Tunisian west coast near Cap Bon , about 60 km from Tunis . The steep and rugged island has an area of almost 4 km² and reaches a height of 435 m above sea level. The two islands of Zembra and Zembretta can be reached by boat from the nearby fishing town of Sidi Daoud .
Flora and fauna
The vegetation of the island is determined by olive trees , wild pistachios , western strawberry trees , multi-flowered heather , Phoenician juniper and gorse . Rats, rabbits, feral domestic cats and European mouflons were brought to the island by humans. Zembra is located on the bird migration route from Sicily to Africa and serves as a resting and feeding space for migratory birds. Dolphins can often be seen in the waters around the island .
