Jiří Havel (born August 20, 1957 in Prague ; † July 8, 2012 in Vienna ) was a Czech politician of the ČSSD .

Life

Havel attended the social science faculty of Charles University in Prague , where he received his doctorate in economics. At the University of Economics in Prague he became an engineer in 1982 and a Candidatus Scientiarum in 1991. During this time he was also a teacher there. In 1992 he became a university pedagogue at the Institute for Economic Studies of the Social Science Faculty of Charles University. From 2001 to 2004 he was Vice President of the Czech Economic Association.

Havel initially belonged to the communist party . After he made some attempts in the early 1990s to organize the independent left, he later moved to the ČSSD. From 1997 he was Deputy Chairman of the Economic Commission. From 1998 to 2006 he was an advisor to the Minister, the Deputy Prime Minister and the Prime Minister of the Czech Republic, after which he advised the Chairman of the Chamber of Deputies . In 2006 he was Deputy Prime Minister for Economic Affairs in the Paroubek government . In 2007 he was elected to the Executive Committee of the Party of European Socialists . In the 2009 European elections , Havel stood as the top candidate for the Social Democrats and entered the European Parliament . On July 8, 2012, he died of a serious illness in the Vienna Academic Hospital. His mandate successor was Vojtěch Mynář .
