The Kuranda National Park (English Kuranda National Park ) is an approximately 243 km² national park in Queensland , Australia . Since 1988 it has been listed as a UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site Wet Tropics of Queensland because of its natural beauty, biodiversity , evolutionary history and as a habitat for numerous endangered animal species . The park is also part of the Wooroonooran Important Bird Area , which is home to numerous endemic bird species. For wildlife, it is an important corridor between the Daintree / Carbine Tablelands region in the north and the parks of the Atherton Tablelands in the south.

location

The park is located in the Far North Queensland region , about 20 km north of Cairns and 30 km south of Port Douglas . In the north it borders directly on the Mombray National Park and in the south on the Barron Gorge National Park . The only access to the park is the Black Mountain Road . It branches off from the Kennedy Highway at Kuranda immediately east of the Barron River Bridge and runs for 43 km through the entire park until it ends near Julatten . The northern and southern parts of the roads can be driven by normal vehicles; the middle section requires all-wheel drive. Black Mountain Road is closed during the rainy season .

Flora and fauna

The tropical rainforest is home to the endangered cassowary ( Casuarius casuarius johnsonii ), a flightless bird that can grow up to 2 m in size, and the rare Lumholtz tree kangaroo ( Dendrolagus lumholtzi ).
