The Barron River , also indigenous Bibhorra , is located in the Atherton Tablelands in northern Queensland at the height of Cairns in Australia .

The 165 km long river originates in the area of Mount Hypipamee National Park , flows through the reservoir Lake Tinaroo and empties near Smithfield in the Coral Sea . Its catchment area is 2,100 km², around 20 percent of which is part of the Wet Tropics of Queensland world cultural heritage with its unique flora and fauna.

The Barron River got its current name in 1875 when two police officers, Johnstone and Douglas, named it after Thomas Henry Bowman Barron , head of the Brisbane Police Department .

course

The upper reaches of the Barron River is formed at the foot of Mount Hypipamee at an altitude of 1020 meters from an extensive network of small streams. From the almost untouched, pristine rainforest of Mount Hypipamee National Park, it flows in a northeastern direction through farmland until it flows into the Lake Tinaroo reservoir 20 kilometers later. The Danbulla National Park is located on its northern banks . The 42 meter high and 533 meter long dam wall is located near the small town of Tinaroo , with the help of which the irrigation of the surrounding agricultural areas is ensured in the dry season. From here the Barron River flows north through the Atherton Tablelands for 40 miles. After passing Mareeba , he turns east, passes the Kennedy Highway Bridge at Kuranda and plunges 4 kilometers further downstream in Barron Gorge National Park, the 260 meter high Barron Falls into the coastal plain north of Cairns. Before it reaches the Coral Sea, it splits into two main arms.

fauna

A total of 63 different fish species have been counted in the river, including various grunts , glass bass and gobies , as well as the spotted blue-eye , the spotted archerfish and the Australian freshwater herring are native to this area.

In addition, the Barron River can be found in the catchment area, ten of the eleven in the Wet Tropics of Queensland endemic mammals such as pseudochirops , Queensland pseudocheiridae , Northern brush potoroidae , Lumholtz tree kangaroos , musk rat kangaroos , Queensland antechinus , pygmy possum , pogonomys , murininae and Mareeba-rock-wallaby .
