North Queensland (dt. North Queensland ), also called Northern Region , is the northern part of the Australian state of Queensland . North Queensland is relatively remote and sparsely populated compared to southern Queensland. The climate is subtropical and hotter than southern Queensland. This is especially true for Tropical North Queensland , the tropical northernmost part. As a result, the country has developed its own regional character and identity.

Townsville is North Queensland's largest urban center , and is therefore considered the unofficial capital. The region had a population of 231,628 people in 2010 and covered 80,041.5 km².

geography

There is no official demarcation that separates North Queensland from the rest of the state of Queensland. Unofficially, its southern border is commonly believed to be south of the Mackay region , but historically it was far south of Rockhampton . Further to the north is the Far North Queensland region , which is centered around Cairns and extends to the Gulf Country region in the west .

Townsville suburbs around Castle Hill

A coastal region is centered around Townsville, the largest city in the region. This city is the main port for the export of goods from the Mount Isa mines and for the export of cattle from the coast and inland. The region has a number of export terminals at Lucinda in the north of the region. Mackay is Australia's sugar capital as it produces most of Australia's sugar that is shipped from the port of Mackay. Mackay is also one of Australia's largest coal shipping ports and is close to Queensland's major coal mines . Dalrymple Bay , south of Mackay, is another port that exports coal and sugar. In the North Queensland region is the inland town of Charters Towers and the coastal towns of Ayr and Ingham .

There are numerous sugar cane mills in this region, like this one at Prosperine

Other North Queensland communities include Home Hill , Sarina , Bowen , Airlie Beach, and Proserpine .

State of North Queensland

Over the years there have been several attempts to form a new federal state. Many attempts at setting the boundaries were rejected. Names and which city will be the capital were discussed. Mainly the places Mackay , Townsville and Cairns are up for discussion . The proposed limit to South Queensland is 22nd parallel .
