Wide Bay-Burnett is a region in Queensland , Australia , north of Brisbane and stretching between the towns of Caloundra and Gladstone . The region's main industries are forestry, sugarcane cultivation , agriculture and tourism.

The region extends over 48,488 km² with diverse landscapes, such as the Great Barrier Reef , wetlands of the Great Sandy Strait , Fraser Island , Bunya Mountains , Cania Gorge and a rural hinterland. The largest sand island in the world, Fraser Island, attracts numerous tourists.

population

It is a strongly growing region that is concentrated along the coastline and has grown above average in the Australian comparison over the last 20 years. More than 80% of the area's population lives in the five centers of Bundaberg , Maryborough , Hervey Bay , Gympie and Kingaroy . In 2009 the population was 287,425 people, more than two thirds of whom lived around Bundaberg and on the Fraser coast. It is expected to grow by 150,000 to 430,000 people by 2031.

Plans were developed for continued growth in 2011, the Wide Bay-Bernett Regional Plan and the Wide Bay Burnett State Planning Regulatory Provisions 2011 .

The region's largest cities are Bundaberg, Gympie, Hervey Bay and Maryborough.

Other cities are Bargara , Biggende , Blackbutt , Burnett Heads , Childers , Eidsvold , Gayndah , Gin Gin , Howard , Imbil , Kilkivan , Monto , Mundubbera , Murgon , Nanango , Tin Can Bay and Wondai .

Education and infrastructure

There are three universities in the region, Central Queensland University , University of Southern Queensland and the Wide Bay Institute of TAFE .

There are three airports: Hervey Bay, Bundaberg and Maryborough.

The Bruce Highway connects the region with Brisbane, Rockhampton , Townsville and Cairns , while the Burnett Highway and Isis Highway form part of the inland transportation corridor to Toowoomba in central New South Wales .

Queensland Rail serves the towns of Gympie, Maryborough and Bundaberg by express train, the Tilt Train .
