Coordinates: 26 ° 17 ′ S , 151 ° 57 ′ E The Aboriginal Shire of Cherbourg is a local government area (LGA) in the Australian state of Queensland . The area is 31.6 km² and has about 1300 inhabitants.
geography
The Shire is located in the southeast of the state about 170 km northwest of the capital Brisbane .
All LGA residents live in the village of Cherbourg, southeast of Murgon.
history
The Barambah Industrial School, a mission and re-education camp for Aboriginal people from across the state, was established on a farm in 1901 . In 1932 the station was renamed Cherbourg. In 1966 the indigenous people living there elected their own council for the administration of the community for the first time and 20 years later Cherbourg received the status of an Aboriginal Local Government Area.

The Cherbourg Council has five members. The Mayor and four other Councilors are elected by all residents of the Shire. The LGA is not divided into electoral districts.
