Central West Queensland is a remote region in Queensland, Australia, measuring 396,650.2 km² with a population of 12,389 people. The region is north of South West Queensland and south of Gulf Country .

Central West Queensland is informed by the radio station ABC Western Queensland .

history

The first exploration by a European was made by Major Thomas Livingstone Mitchell , who came to the area in 1846. Mitchell was at Isisford on the Barcoo River when his crew ran out of food and were threatened by the Aborigines . He then decided to return to Sydney and completed his successful expedition in which he had explored large areas of the unknown land.

The eastern extension of the Simpson Desert lies in the region, as do Haddon Corner and Poeppel Corner , the border markings of Queensland. Bioregions in this area include the Channel Country .

Parts of the Cooper Basin are in this region. This sedimentary basin contains the most important deposits of petroleum and natural gas on the Australian continent.

In the Queensland elections, part of the region falls into the Division of Maranoa and Division of Kennedy constituencies . Local Government Areas (LGAs) are the Barcoo Shire , Diamantina Shire , Boulia Shire , Winton Shire , Longreach Region , Blackall-Tambo Region, and Barcaldine Region .

Cities

The main cities in Central West Queensland are Longreach , Winton , Blackall and Barcaldine . Barcaldine was the site of the Sheep Shearers Strike (1891) , one of the earliest and most significant events in the Australian labor movement. The Australian Stockman's Hall of Fame is a museum in Longreach that shows the labors of early pioneers in the Australian outback . The building was completed in 1987 and opened by Queen Elizabeth II on April 29, 1988.

Smaller towns in the region include Bedourie , Birdsville , Boulia , Urandangi , Isisford , Yaraka , Jundah , Stonehenge , Windorah , Alpha , Aramac , Jericho , Tambo, and Muttaburra . The ghost town of Betoota is considered Australia's smallest city.

Rivers

Rivers in the region that often only carry water for a short time are the Barcoo River , Georgina River , Diamantina River , Thomson River , Burke River , Hamilton River, and Cooper Creek .

National parks

Numerous national parks are located in the region, such as the Simpson Desert National Park , Cudmore National Park , Diamantina National Park , Astrebla Downs National Park , Welford National Park , Goneaway National Park , Lochern National Park and Bladensburg National Park .

Transportation

The main roads in the region are the Capricorn Highway and Landsborough Highway . In the north of the region these are the Kennedy Highway , which runs from Boulia to Cairns on the east coast of Australia. The Central Railway reached Longreach in 1892. Today, the Spirit of the Outback operates the railway line from Brisbane to Longreach. There are six airports in Central West Queensland : Longreach Airport , Winton Airport , Windorah Airport , Barcaldine Airport , Aramac Airport and Blackall Airport .
