The Diamantina National Park is a national park in the state of Queensland , Australia .

location

It is located about 1,278 kilometers northwest of Brisbane and 300 km southwest of Winton .

General

The park was established in March 1992 and covers approximately 507,000 hectares. It extends from sandstone mountains in the east to the flat plain of the Diamantina River . In between are the Mitchell grassland, dune fields and a desert to the west. Lake Constance and Hunters Gorge are also notable landscapes in the park.

history

In the past, the Maiawali and Karuwali Aborigines lived in the park.

Flora and fauna

The park is home to numerous plants and animals. Particularly noteworthy are rare mammals such as the rabbit- nosed hawk and the kowari, as well as birds such as the steppe runner and the peregrine falcon .

tourism

There is the Hunters Gorge Campground, which is about 10 kilometers north of the park administration, and the Gum Hole Campground, which is about 7 miles west of Hunters Gorge on Duck Creek.
