The Kirrama National Park (English Kirrama National Park ) is a 172 km² national park in Queensland , Australia . Since 1988 it has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site " Wet Tropics of Queensland " because of its natural beauty, biological diversity , evolutionary history and as a habitat for numerous endangered animal species . The park is also part of the Wooroonooran Important Bird Area , which is home to numerous endemic bird species.
location
The park is located in the North Queensland region and is approximately 25 miles northwest of Cardwell and 22 miles southwest of Tully . It borders directly in the north on the Koombooloomba National Park and in the south on the Girramay and Girringun National Park . It can be reached via Gunnawarra Road, which branches off the Kennedy Highway 4 km south of Mount Garnet . The 70 km long access road should only be used in dry conditions, all-wheel drive vehicles are recommended.
Flora and fauna
The Kirrama National Park is characterized by a furrowed mountain landscape overgrown by lush rainforests and open eucalyptus forest. The walking trail at Society Flat , once the center of a thriving timber industry, is the only accessible area of the park. Here you will find magnificent cowries and rose gums that have been spared from felling, as this area was already designated as a beauty spot in the 1950s . In addition, myrtle heaths and northern silky oaks provide shelter for a large number of different animals. Different species of ringbuckers , possums , honey-eaters , helmet cassowaries , parrots and musk-rat kangaroos live in the park .
