National nature

The archipelago consists of 18 islands on the continental shelf and various rock reefs in the surrounding sea. 15 islands, including North Keppel Island as the largest with 627 hectares, form the publicly accessible national park. Only Great Keppel Island in the south with 1,454 hectares (in part), as well as its small neighboring islands Barren Island and Peak Island , serve only scientific purposes.

The islands often have steep slopes and rocky cliffs that plunge into the sea, but also offer hidden coves with sandy beaches.

Flora and fauna

You can find open grass and heathland as well as dense eucalyptus and rainforests . Many endangered animal and plant species can be found there.

Facilities

Camping is permitted on the following islands after obtaining a permit: North Keppel Island, Humpy Island, Middle Island, Miall Island, Conical Island, Devided Island and Pelican Island .

There are three landscaped hiking trails on North Keppel Island , the Mazie Bay Track (3.5 km), the Keppel Bay Lookout Track (3.1 km) and the Island Hilltop Track (5.3 km). On Humpy Island there is the Ridgetop Trail (1.9 km).

In addition, reef walks are recommended at low tide, especially in Mazie Bay .

history

From the 1950s to around 1994 there was a small resort with 12 beach houses on North Keppel Island that was run by the Walls family . There was also a boat service.

Afterwards the area was taken over by the national park administration.

Driveway

The islands can only be reached by boat. These can be rented in Yeppoon or Rosslyn Bay . Only the small islands Flat Island and Perforated Island are difficult to reach because they are very far from the coast and rocky all around.
