General
The park is located in the middle of the range of hills of the Narrien Range which extends for 13 kilometers in a north-south direction. With the 759 meter high summit of Mount Campoven , the hills, visible from afar, protruded from the surrounding lowlands. While the higher, inaccessible areas have remained largely untouched in the past, the surrounding plains have been cleared and used for cattle breeding. Around 90 percent of the ecosystems in the Brigalow Belt North bioregion have been destroyed in this way since they were settled by the Europeans. The national park protects six different plant and animal communities in this bioregion, which have largely been preserved in their original state.
Flora and fauna
Particularly worthy of protection are scrubland, with "Lancewood" ( Acacia shirleyi ) and "Bendee" ( Acacia catenulata ) scrub, and open woodland with "Blackbutts" ( Eucalyptus cambageana ), "Mountain Yapunyah" ( Eucalyptus thozetiana ) and one Substructure made from "Brigalow" ( Acacia harpophylla ).
The park with its diverse flora is also a retreat for numerous animal species. Four different frog , 31 reptile , 17 mammal and 101 bird species were counted here. The crested kite ( Lophoictinia isura ), the letter pigeon ( Geophaps scripta ), the black-chin honey-gourmet ( Melithreptus gularis ), the pygmy marten ( Dasyurus hallucatus ) and the yakka skink ( Egernia rugosa ) are threatened or endangered with extinction .
The eastern edge of the distribution area of the red giant kangaroo extends into the Narrien Range National Park.
