The Isla Gorge National Park (English: Isla Gorge National Park ) is a national park in the southeast of the Australian state of Queensland .

location

It is 415 kilometers northwest of Brisbane and 50 kilometers north of Taroom on the Leichhardt Highway .

The Precipice , Palmgrove and Expedition National Parks are in the vicinity .

National nature

The park is located on a sandstone plateau in which the water has carved several gorges. Sandstone monoliths, arches and overhangs create a breathtaking scenery.

Flora and fauna

The park is known for its flowers. Acacias , coral diamonds , grevillings and grass trees create a sea of ​​flowers from June to September. But there are also evergreen rainforests and rare eucalyptus species such as Eucalyptus beaniana .

The park is populated by different types of honeyeater . You can also find eagles and falcons circling over the gorges.

heritage Site

In 1990 the national park was expanded so that it now includes a remnant of the old road from Roma to Rockhampton Seaport near Flagstaff Hill . It was built by hand from natural stone slabs at the beginning of the 1860s, only 15 years after the beginning of European settlement in the area.

Facilities and access

The campsite of the same name is located directly on the edge of Isla Gorge . There are no hiking trails except for a short stretch from the campground to a natural viewing platform over Gorge Creek and Devils Nest . The picnic area is only 1.3 kilometers from the highway and is equipped with a dry toilet, a shelter and a water tank.

The park is located on Leichhardt Highway 55 kilometers north of Taroom and 35 kilometers south of Theodore . From the exit it is only 1.3 kilometers by road to the lookout over the gorge.
