The Oyala Thumotang National Park (English Oyala Thumotang National Park ), also called Mungkan Kandju National Park until 2012 , is a 3800 square kilometer national park on the Cape York Peninsula in Queensland , Australia . It is administered by the local Aborigines together with the Queensland National Park Administration under the status of Cape York Peninsula Aboriginal Land (CYPAL) .

location

The park is located in the Far North Queensland region , 330 kilometers northwest of Cooktown and 150 kilometers southeast of Weipa . About 20 kilometers north of Coen , the Rokeby Road branches off from the Peninsula Developmental Road to the west into the park. The path leads through the park for 125 kilometers and is only suitable for all-wheel drive vehicles. Most sections of the road are simple bush tracks , so vehicles should be in good mechanical condition.

The national parks KULLA (McIlwraith Range) and Iron Range are in the neighborhood .

National nature

In the area of the Langi and Coen Rivers , dense tropical rainforest grows in the east on the slopes of the McIlwraith Range , in the west along the rivers there is a thicket of climbing plants. These green fingers are important corridors for many animal species. In contrast to these widely ramified, many channel-like rivers, the Archer River runs in a single, deeply incised bed, lined with myrtle heaths and dense rainforest. In the area between the two rivers, open eucalyptus forests dominate , interspersed with swamps and lagoons , which are filled with water during the rainy season by the overflow of the surrounding rivers.
