The McIlwraith Range is a mountainous country on the Cape York Peninsula , Far North Queensland , Australia . The area is part of the Great Dividing Range , about 15 km east of Coen and 550 km north of Cairns . It covers about 3,000 km² and extends 80 km in a north-south direction. The mountainous landscape is under national conservation and is part of a larger bird sanctuary from Birdlife International .

Surname

The area is named after Sir Thomas McIlwraith (1835–1900), a Queensland Prime Minister who was elected in three terms. The mountainous country is protected by the KULLA (McIlwraith Range) National Park (CYPAL), which is under national conservation .

Green tree python

The McIlwraight Range is a relatively low-lying granite plateau ; the majority of the mountains rise to around 450 meters above sea level. The highest mountain is 824 meters high.

Rainforests grow in the landscape with rugged mountains, steep slopes and ravines, and there are waterfalls, streams and rivers due to heavy rainfall of around 1500 mm per year.

The fauna of 56 species is similar to that of New Guinea , including climbing bucket ( Phalanger maculatus ), magnificent bird of paradise ( Ptiloris magnificus ), manucodia ( Manucodia keraudrenii ), palm cockatoo ( Probosciger aterrimus ) and Cape York spotted cuscus ( Spilocuscus nudica ). 28 animal species are rare. The area is also inhabited by the green tree python ( Morelia viridis ), and the gecko ( Orraya occultus ) is endemic .

The mountainous area is part of the 6205 km² McIlwraith and Iron Ranges Important Bird Area ( IBA ) owned by BirdLife International .

92 plant species grow in the area, 16 of them are endemic, and the orchid species (Cepobaculum johannis) and the acacia species (Acacia albizioides) that grow there are rare .

Aboriginal

The Kaanju, Umpila, Lama Lama and Ayapathu Aborigines have lived there for thousands of years. A Kulla Land Trust , which manages the national park in the mountains, holds a native title over an area of ​​2090 km².
