BirdLife International is an international organization for the protection of birds , their habitats and the worldwide conservation of biodiversity , based in Cambridge .

history

The organization was founded in 1922 by ornithologists Thomas Gilbert Pearson and Jean Théodore Delacour under the name International Committee for Bird Protection ; In 1928 it was renamed the International Committee for Bird Preservation . After the Second World War , the interest group disbanded. In the 1960s it was called the International Council for Bird Preservation ( ICBP , German  International Council for Bird Conservation ). It became active again in 1983 after the appointment of a professional director, and in 1994 it changed its name to BirdLife International . Today it is one of the most respected international nature conservation organizations. It is an official partner of the IUCN .

organization

BirdLife acts as a network of national partner organizations ( NGOs ). In addition to the global secretariat in Cambridge, there are regional BirdLife secretariats in all continents. The European secretariat is located in Brussels , from where lobbying work in Brussels and Strasbourg is coordinated. The national BirdLife partners have to meet some conditions, such as democratic organizational structures, independence from government, clear bird protection programs, an ethical orientation corresponding to the goals of BirdLife , a functioning financial management and others.

The honorary president is Princess Takamado ; previously it was Queen Nūr of Jordan .

Agendas

The international motto is: Working together for birds and people . The aim is the sustainable use of natural resources .

The organization is responsible for the Red List of Endangered Species of Birds. It also leads the worldwide list of Important Bird Areas (created in 1979 as an extension of the EC Birds Directive , which are also a criterion for the other European bird protection areas BSG / SPA), and the list of Endemic Bird Areas (EBA) as a special category of endemic , unique Species.

In 2007 the organization initiated a sponsorship (the so-called Species Champions) for the world's most endangered bird species (currently 190). This should act as a signal for better protection of these bird species.
