History and purpose

The organization was founded in 1986 and has around 100 members and 11 full-time employees. The aim of A&C is: "To contribute to the conservation of birds, their habitats and the biodiversity in Ecuador, for the benefit of people and with their active participation.
Some of the most species-rich habitats for birds worldwide are located in the national borders of Ecuador. Conservation International identified two biodiversity hotspots ( Tumbes-Chocó-Magdalena including the Galápagos Islands and the Andes ) in the small country.

Fields of work

In general, A&C describes its fields of work as follows:

Endangered Species Program

The endangered species program aims to conduct scientific research on a number of critically endangered birds in the IBAs (Important Bid Areas) of Ecuador, such as: Mindo and the west side of the Pichincha Volcano IBA, Guayllabamba Valley IBA, Atacazo IBA, Cashca Totoras Protection Forest IBA, Cotacachi Cayapas Ecological Reserve IBA, San Cristobal IBA.

Water bird program

A&C conducted a study on the effectiveness of national conservation efforts for water birds. It is intended to set priorities, identify gaps in knowledge and develop strategies. The data should also be used to create the basis for cooperation across national borders.
