The Black Mountain National Park (English. Black Mountain National Park ) in the Australian state of Queensland covers an area of about 781 hectares about 25 kilometers southwest of Cooktown . It is part of the Wet Tropics of Queensland UNESCO World Heritage Site .
geology
Characteristic of the park are the mountains that give it its name, which are actually light gray granite - the dark color is caused by the growth of blue-green algae .
Around 260 million years ago, magma solidified here deep below the earth's surface. Overlying softer rock eroded over time and released the granite. Further weathering, especially the clash of cold rain and rock heated by the sun, led to today's rugged appearance.
fauna
The park is home to three endemic species: the frog Cophixalus saxatilis that Skinkart Carlia scirtetis and the gecko species Nactus galgajuga .
