The Camooweal Caves National Park ( English Camooweal Caves National Park ) is a national park in the northwest of the Australian state of Queensland .

location

The reserve is 1,720 kilometers northwest of Brisbane and eight kilometers south of Camooweal on the Barkly Highway , east of the Georgina River . The area belongs to the Barkly Tableland , a table land that extends over the east of the Northern Territory and northwest of Queensland.

Terrain forms

The flat steppe country consists of soluble dolomite , in which sinkholes and caves have formed through rainwater , which are up to 75 meters deep and connected by shafts. These sinkholes and caves are not accessible to visitors, but pose a certain risk for hikers to fall into them.

Flora and fauna

In the semi-arid region has a light-find eucalyptus forest , scrubland with turpentine - acacia and large areas with spinifex grass and Astrebla .

The park serves as a stopover for migratory birds on their way to their winter quarters in northern Australia. At times you can watch water birds and species of birds that live in the light forest.

Facilities

There are two short hiking trails in the park, the Little Nowranie Cave Walking Track and the Great Nowranie Cave Walking Track . Both start at a parking lot, where camping is also allowed. You can explore the park on mountain bikes , off-road motorcycles, and all-wheel drive vehicles.
