Northern Territory

The Barkly Highway begins in the Northern Territory in Threeways, where it branches off from the Stuart Highway (N87). The junction is about 25 km north of Tennant Creek , 531 km north of Alice Springs and 966 km south of Darwin .

The road runs eastwards through mostly desert and savanna-like areas, before after a short time it reaches the first foothills of the Barkly Tablelands . After about 190 km the highway leads through Barkly Homestead , where the Tablelands Highway (S11) branches off to the north. From there, the Barkly Highway runs another 250 km to the east before crossing the Queensland border.

Queensland

Only 13 km across the border is Camooweal, the first larger town in Queensland, in the immediate vicinity of which the Camooweal Caves National Park is located. The Barkly Highway continues to the southeast and after about 190 km, Mount Isa, the largest city in northwest Queensland, is reached. This is known as one of the largest cities in the world in terms of area and is an important center of the iron ore industry in Australia. Another 120 km east of the Barkly Highway ends about 12 km east of Cloncurry. In Cloncurry, the Burke Developmental Road (R83) branches off towards Normanton in the north. East of the city, the Barkly Highway divides into the Flinders Highway (A6), which leads to Townsville on the east coast of Queensland, and the Landsborough Highway (A2) to Longreach in southeast Queensland.

The highest point on the highway is 456 m, the lowest is 193 m.
