geography
River course
The river has its source at Mount Tracey on the northern slopes of the Selwyn Range . It flows first to the northwest to the small town of Malbon , where the Malbon River flows into it.
There he turns north and flows through the city of Cloncurry , where he crosses under the Flinders Highway . Then he makes an arc to the northeast and crosses under Wills Developmental Road at Sedan Dip . East of this road it takes up the Gilliat River and turns its course to the northwest, along the road and almost parallel to the Flinders River .
In Canobe opens Dugald River . Further north, the Burke Development Road accompanies the Cloncurry River, which turns north of Cowan Downs again to the northeast and flows into the Flinders River at Bang Bang .
In its lower reaches the river runs through flat grassland. Together with the Flinders River and the Saxby River, it forms a wide flood plain with many parallel channels.
