Reo (also Reomäe ) is a village ( Estonian küla ) in the rural municipality Saaremaa (until 2017: rural municipality Pihtla ) on the largest Estonian island Saaremaa (German Ösel ).

Location and population

The village is twelve kilometers northeast of the island's capital Kuressaare (German Arensburg ). It has 23 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2011).

Orthodox Church

The settlement was founded at the beginning of the 18th century. There has been its own Orthodox parish in Reo since 1849. The services were initially held on the local estate, later in a wooden church building.

On October 20, 1873, today's church with its dome and four small corner towers was inaugurated. Like many Orthodox churches on Saaremaa, it is a type building .

The church is dedicated to the apostle Andrew . The iconostasis dates from 1888.

Nunnery

In 2012 the orthodox nunnery " Of St. John the Baptist " , founded three years earlier, was moved from Ööriku to Reo, where it is located today. The converted former priest's house serves as the monastery building.

The Skite is subordinate to the Greek Orthodox Estonian Apostolic Orthodox Church ( Eesti Apostlik-Õigeusu Kirik - EAÕK). The monastery is part of the Orthodox monastery on Mount Kissavos (Κίσσαβος) in Eastern Thessalia ( Greece ).
