Pähkla (German Pechel ) is a village ( Estonian küla ) on the largest Estonian island Saaremaa . It belongs to the rural municipality Saaremaa (until 2017: rural municipality Lääne-Saare ) in the Saare district .

Population and location

The village has 158 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2016). Its area is 9.66 km².

The place is six kilometers north of the island's capital Kuressaare . An old sacrificial spring is located southeast of the village center on the west bank of the Pähkla jõgi river .

history

Pähkla was first mentioned in 1453 under the name Pechgell . In 1493 the Pechel farm with the village and the Pehkla mill was lent to a certain Clawes Wedberch. In 1504 the farm passed to the noble Baltic German family Vietinghof , to which it belonged until 1608.
