Kuiste (German Kuist ) is a village ( Estonian küla ) on the largest Estonian island Saaremaa . It belongs to the rural municipality Saaremaa (until 2017: rural municipality Valjala ) ( Valjala vald ) in the Saare district .

The village has 17 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2011). It is 31 kilometers northeast of the island's capital Kuressaare .

Dendrarium

In Kuiste is the arboretum of the Estonian farmer Juhan Alas (1874-1963).

Alas bought a farm in Kuiste in 1897. In the 1930s he founded a dendrarium that was exemplary for the time and planted around 80 different tree species from all over the world between 1933 and 1937. The dendrarium was badly damaged after Alas' death.
