Rootsiküla (Saaremaa)

Rootsiküla (German Rotziküll ) is a village ( Estonian küla ) on the largest Estonian island Saaremaa . It belongs to the rural community of Saaremaa (until 2017: rural community of Kihelkonna ) in the Saare district .
Population and location
The village has 32 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2011). It is located on the Papissaare peninsula ( Papissaare poolsaar ) directly on the Baltic Sea .

To the west of the village center is the Papissaare harbor (Papissaare sadam) . From there, boats run regularly to the island of Vilsandi . There is a long-established fishing industry at the port, which is best known for its sprats . The hangars for seaplanes date from the First World War .
A memorial stone in the harbor commemorates the era of the large sailing ships, which were built in the region in particular in the 1890s and were harbored in Papissaare. The best-known among them was the ocean-going three-master "Emma".
