Aste is a village ( Estonian alevik ) on the largest Estonian island Saaremaa . It belongs to the rural municipality Saaremaa (until 2017: rural municipality Lääne-Saare ) in the Saare district .

Population and location

The village has 436 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2016). Its area is 0.66 km². The place is twelve kilometers north of the island's capital Kuressaare .

history

The forerunner of today's elementary school was founded in 1870. In 2013 a new school building was inaugurated.

During the Soviet occupation of Estonia, the Soviet armed forces maintained a military airfield near the village center. After Estonian independence was regained, it was largely demolished.
