Laugu (German Laugo ) is a village ( Estonian küla ) on the largest Estonian island Saaremaa . It belongs to the rural community Saaremaa (until 2017: rural community Leisi ) in the Saare district .

Population and location

The village has 55 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2011). It is located 36 kilometers northeast of the island's capital Kuressaare at the southwest end of Parasmetsa Bay (Parasmetsa laht) .

History and good

The place was first mentioned in 1617 under the name Lowke .

In 1653 a certain Hans Rehren exchanged his Gut Brakelshof for the Kronsgut Laugo . From 1653 to 1843 the estate was owned by the noble Baltic German family Rehren . From 1846 until it was expropriated as part of the Estonian land reform in 1919, it belonged to the von Helmersen family .
