Suure-Rootsi (German Groß-Rotsi ) is a village ( Estonian küla ) on the largest Estonian island Saaremaa . It belongs to the rural community Saaremaa (until 2017: rural community Pihtla ) in the Saare district .

Population and location

The village has 64 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2011). It is located on the east coast of the Vätta peninsula ( Vätta poolsaar ), on the Baltic Sea bay Sutu ( Sutu laht ).

The small port of Kärsa ( Kärsa sadam ) also belongs to the area of ​​the village .

history

Like its neighboring village Väike-Rootsi, the village was first mentioned in a document in 1497 under the name Vettel . At that time it was inhabited by Swedes. Rootsi means "Sweden" in Estonian , Suur means "big".

Personalities

The Estonian writer Albert Uustulnd (1925–1997) was born in Suure-Rootsi .
