Iide (German Ide ) is a village ( Estonian küla ) in the rural municipality of Saaremaa in the Saare district on the largest Estonian island of Saaremaa . Until 2017 it was the main town of the rural community of Torgu , which then merged into the rural community of Saaremaa.

Description and history

The place has 42 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2011). It is 38 kilometers southwest of the island's capital Kuressaare .

The now defunct Torgu estate (German Torkenhof ) has been the administrative center of the area since the 14th century.

The rural community's primary school is located in Iide. It goes back to the Orthodox parish school founded in 1863.

The Orthodox Church dedicated to the Apostle John was built in 1873. It was destroyed in autumn 1944. Today only the ruins remain of the church.
