Saaremetsa (German Holmhof ) is a village ( Estonian küla ) on the largest Estonian island Saaremaa . It belongs to the Saaremaa rural community (until 2017: Laimjala rural community ) in the Saare district .

Population and location

The village has 34 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2011). It is located 43 kilometers northeast of the island's capital Kuressaare , not far from the southeastern coast of the island.

Immediately south of the village is the 18.6 hectare Saanalaht lake .

history

In the Middle Ages the place consisted of a fortified house. For the year 1562 it is recorded as Holmhoue .

Oral tradition has it that a nunnery with a chapel existed in the Middle Ages . The Holmhoff pitcher is mentioned in a document for 1731 .
