Mõnnuste (German Mönnust ) is a village ( Estonian küla ) on the largest Estonian island Saaremaa . It belongs to the rural municipality Saaremaa (until 2017: rural municipality Lääne-Saare ) in the Saare district .
Population and location
The village has 61 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2016). Its area is 8.19 km².
The place is 14 kilometers northwest of the island's capital Kuressaare . It was first mentioned in a document in 1592. The Kärla River (Kärla jõgi) flows east of the village center .
Orthodox Church
Only the ruins of the Orthodox Church of the Appearance of the Holy Trinity (Kolmainu Jumala Ilmumise kirik) with its two towers were built in 1868 . With the Soviet occupation of Estonia in 1941, the bell tower was demolished because there was an air force base nearby . The parish was finally dissolved by the Soviet authorities in 1949. The church then served as a sports hall, warehouse for the local kolkhoz farm and finally as a sheepfold.
