Suur-Rahula (German Groß-Rahhil ) is a village ( Estonian küla ) on the largest Estonian island Saaremaa . It belongs to the Saaremaa rural community (until 2017: Orissaare rural community ) in the Saare district .

Population and location

The village has 67 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2011). It is 44 kilometers northeast of the island's capital Kuressaare .

Personalities

Suur-Rahula is the birthplace of the Estonian historian Herbert Ligi (1928–1990). Especially in the final phase of the Estonian SSR, he played an important role in coming to terms with Soviet crimes.
