Orissaare (German: Orrisaar ) is a former rural community in the Estonian district of Saare with an area of 163.02 km². It had 2,116 inhabitants (as of June 1, 2007). In 2017 all municipalities on Saaremaa merged to form the new rural municipality Saaremaa .
Orissaare was located in the northeast of the Saaremaa island , 54 km from Kuressaare . In addition to the main town Orissaare (1131 inhabitants) encompasses the rural community of the villages Ariste , Arju , Haapsu , Hindu , Imavere , Jaani , Järveküla , Kalma , Kareda , Kavandi , Kuninguste , Kõinastu , Laheküla , Liigalaskma , Liiva , Maasi , Mehama , Mäeküla , Ööriku , Orinõmme , sweater , Põripõllu , Randküla , Rannaküla , Raugu , Saikla , Salu , Suur-Pahila , Suur-Rahula , Taaliku , Tagavere , Tumala , Võhma , Väike-Pahila , Väike-Rahula and Väljaküla .
The area of Orissaare was mentioned as early as 1227-1233, when the area was under the rule of the Brothers of the Sword . The place was first mentioned as Orisaar in 1464. After 1343 an Ordensburg (Estonian: Maasilinn , German: Soneburg ) was built near Maasi , which was largely destroyed in 1576.
The tourist port of Orissaare on the Bay of Illiku and the coastal landscape were significant. The rich fauna attracted numerous ornithologists.
