Orissaare (German Orrisaar ) is a village ( Estonian alevik ) in the rural municipality Saaremaa in the Saare district on the largest Estonian island Saaremaa . Until 2017, it was the capital of a rural community of the same name .

description

The village has 841 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2011). It is right on the Baltic Sea. In the village there is a library as well as the grammar school founded in 1946. A youth hostel is now housed in the old syringe house.

Before the construction of the dam between the islands of Saaremaa and Muhu in 1896, Orissaare and its port were the arrival point of the mainland ferries to Saaremaa. The port on the small island of Illiku off the village is no longer of logistical importance.

Oak tree on the football field

The curiosity of the place is an oak tree that stands in the middle of the local football pitch. When the stadium was expanded in 1951, the tree was left standing because the Soviet construction workers were unable to remove the roots. Today football players got used to him.

In 2015 the oak was voted “European Tree of the Year”.
