Muhu ( German Moon or Mohn , Swedish Moon ) is the third largest island in Estonia . It belongs to the Moonsund Islands .
Location and inhabitants
The island in the northern Baltic Sea with about 1,697 inhabitants (2010) is a municipality of Muhu (Muhu vald) part of the Saare district (Saare maakond) , which also includes the neighboring island of Saaremaa to the southwest . The municipal area covers 198 km² .
In the north there are steep coasts of abrasion with high cliffs . The vegetation is typical of a karst landscape with juniper bushes . Neolithic graves can be found in Külasema. Iron Age stone boxes lie on the north and west coast. In the south-west lies the Muhu castle . There are also bowl stones of unknown age on the island.

The Estonian islands of Kesselaid , Suurlaid , Viirelaid and Võilaid also belong to the rural municipality of Muhu .
Muhu is connected to Orissaare on Saaremaa by a navigable dam built in 1896 . From Kuivastu in the southeast there are regular ferry connections to Virtsu (Werder) on the Estonian mainland. In winter, when the sound is frozen deep enough, the island can be reached by land vehicle via a route marked on the ice.
Together with Saaremaa, Hiiumaa and Vormsi smaller and a plurality Muhu islands is part of a biosphere of the UNESCO , which covers an land area of approximately 4.040, and comprises a water area of approximately 11,150 square kilometers.
The island is known for the last remaining windmills in Estonia and for the battle in Moon Sound in autumn 1917 between Russian and German naval units.
