The ship class MM 90 FC denotes a series of three double-ended ferries .

history

The ships ordered on August 24, 2007 were built by the Norwegian shipyard Fiskerstrand BLRT for the Estonian shipping company Saaremaa Laevakompanii. The hulls were built by Western Shipyard in Klaipėda , the equipment was carried out on the Fiskerstrand Verft in Fiskerstrand. The construction costs are said to have totaled around 90 million euros.

The ships were used under the Estonian flag with home port Roomassaare in the Baltic Sea between the Estonian mainland and the islands of Hiiumaa and Muhu .

Since August 20, 2015, two of the ferries, the Muhumaa and the Saaremaa , have been used on the resumed ferry connection across the Elbe between Cuxhaven and Brunsbüttel across the Lower Elbe . The connection was temporarily closed again on March 1, 2017. From May 25, 2017, the Muhumaa , which had been renamed Grete and brought under the German flag , the two ships used on the ferry connection meanwhile sailed under the flag of Malta , were used again on the connection. In the summer, the operator exchanged the Grete with Saaremaa . While the Grete was launched in Bremerhaven , the ferry service with the Saaremaa continued until October 9, 2017. A further operation of the ship was prohibited by the owner company, whereupon this ship was launched.

The Elb-Link subsidiary of the Estonian shipping company marketed the ships with a capacity of 160 cars or 16 trucks and 52 cars as well as 600 passengers under the names Grete and Anne-Marie . The company remembered Margaretha (Greten) Handorf from Cuxhaven who, after the First World War, started a ferry connection between Cuxhaven and Brunsbüttel with two cutters with these names.

All three ferries were sold to a group of investors in spring 2017. They were of Conmar Shipping in Jork bereedert . After the Grete , the other two ferries were also brought under the German flag. Home port became Cuxhaven.

The Hiiumaa was laid up in the Ostuferhafen in Kiel after the end of the mission in Estonia in October 2017 .

In September 2018, all three ships were sold to the Canadian company Labrador Marine after they had previously been laid up in various German ports. The Grete and the Hiiumaa operate under new names two ferry routes off the coast of the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador and replace two almost 50-year-old ships there. The Grete is under the new name Qajaq W on the route across the Belle Isle Road between Blanc-Sablon in the province of Québec and St. Barbe in Newfoundland , where it replaced the Apollo . It is marketed with a capacity of 300 passengers and 120 vehicles as well as eight trailers. The former Hiiumaa serves as Kamutik W from Goose Bay on the route along the east coast of the Labrador Peninsula to the town of Nain in the north. For this purpose, the ship was equipped with cabins for 80 passengers. The conversion reduced the capacity of the ship to 140 passengers as well as 20 vehicles and 125 cargo units.

The Saaremaa was sold to the Société des traversiers du Québec in summer 2019, which needed a replacement for the FA Gauthier ferry, which had already been canceled the previous winter . It runs as Saaremaa 1 over the St. Lawrence River between Matane and Godbout or Matane and Baie-Comeau .

Technical data and equipment

The ships have two vehicle decks, a 5.7 meter high, open deck with five lanes next to each other and below that another 3.0 meter high deck that is accessible via a ramp from the open vehicle deck. The open vehicle deck can be loaded and unloaded via folding ramps with three lanes at both ends of the ship. In front of the ramps there is a foldable bow visor on each side . The superstructures with four additional decks are located above the open vehicle deck. The hulls are reinforced with ice ( ice class  1A). The ships can carry 150 cars. They are approved for 690 passengers. There are seats for 400 passengers on the passenger decks.

The ships are powered by diesel-electric technology . Four diesel generator sets are available for power generation. The generators are of four diesel engines from Wärtsilä Finland driven, two Wärtsilä 6L20, each with 1,200  kW power and two Wärtsilä 8L20 kW each with 1600 performance. The generators from AvK have an apparent power of 1425 or 2000  kVA . An emergency generator from Volvo Penta was also installed. The two propeller pods , one at each end of the ferry, are powered by two electric motors.
