Nain ( Inuit name: Nunajnguk ) is a town in the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador .
The parish belongs to the Census Division No. 11 . It is located on the eastern tip of a peninsula on the north east coast of Labrador . An archipelago of numerous islands, including Paul Island , 4.7 km to the east , separates Nain from the open sea. Nain is the northernmost permanent settlement in Labrador. Nain has a small airfield ( IATA : YDP). The village can usually be reached by plane from Happy Valley-Goose Bay, 370 km south . Between mid-June and mid-November there is a ferry service from Goose Bay along the Labrador Coast to Nain.
The 2016 census revealed a population of 1125 inhabitants for the municipality. In the census in 2011 it was 1188. Thus, the population has decreased slightly in recent years. The population is mainly Inuit or of mixed Inuit and European descent.
history
Nain was founded in 1771 as a mission of the Moravian Brethren under Jens Haven. In 1959, the Hebron Mission further north was disbanded and the Inuit population there was forcibly relocated to Nain. Since December 1, 2005, Nain has been the administrative center of the newly founded autonomous region of Nunatsiavut .

The climate is determined by the Labrador Current. Nain lies on the northern edge of the cold temperate climate zone . That means, the place is on the arctic tree line . In the summer months of July and August the average temperature is 10 ° C, in the winter months of January and February it is −18 ° C.
