Baie-Comeau is a city in the province of Quebec in Canada . It is located on the northwest bank of the Saint Lawrence River , near the mouth of the Rivière Manicouagan , about 420 km from the city of Québec . The ferry crossing across the Bay of the St. Lawrence River takes about two hours. The capital of the administrative region Côte-Nord has around 22,000 inhabitants in two districts (as of 2016).
history
The area around Baie-Comeau was discovered by the French navigator Jacques Cartier in the mid-16th century .
In 1882, the Roman Catholic Apostolic Prefecture of Saint Lawrence Gulf was established, which became an Apostolic Vicariate in 1905 and a diocese in 1945. It was not until 1986 that the diocese received its final name, Diocese of Baie-Comeau . The episcopal church is the Saint-Jean-Eudes Cathedral , which was built between 1958 and 1960.
The city itself was founded by the then owner of the Chicago Tribune in 1936 when a paper mill was being built here .

Economy and tourism
The main sources of income are Alcoa's aluminum mill since 1956, paper mills since 1936 and a dam with a hydro-Québec- operated hydroelectric power plant.
Route 138 (Québec) runs through the city and runs from the border with the US state of New York along the north bank of the Saint Lawrence River to the south coast of the Labrador Peninsula . The city is also the southern terminus of Quebec Route 389 .
Baie-Comeau is surrounded by a lot of unspoiled nature in the Canadian state property, in which animals such as black bear , elk , wolf , bald eagle, Canada goose , lynx , caribou , elk , whales and various game fish live in the wild. Fishing , outdoor activities, snowshoeing hiking and skiing are all available to tourists . The snow depth is up to two meters in winter.
Sports
In 2010 and 2013 the UCI Paracycling Road World Championships took place in Baie-Comeau .
Personalities
It is the hometown of former Canadian Prime Minister Brian Mulroney . The director and screenwriter Manon Briand was also born in this city.
