The Route 138 is a national road ( route nationale ) of the Canadian province of Quebec . It begins on the border with the US state of New York and runs along the north bank of the Saint Lawrence River to the south coast of the Labrador Peninsula . The length of the road is 1,389.3 kilometers.
Route description
Route 138 begins as a continuation of New York State Route 30 on the Canada-US border , near the village of Elgin . It follows the Rivière Trout and the Rivière Châteauguay to the city of Châteauguay . At Kahnawake , it crosses the Saint Lawrence River and reaches the Île de Montréal , on which the metropolis of Montreal is located. After crossing the Rivière des Prairies , the mainland is reached again at Repentigny . Route 138 then runs parallel to the north bank of the St. Lawrence River. It reaches the provincial capital Québec via Trois-Rivières . The section between Montreal and Québec essentially corresponds to the Chemin du Roy ("Royal Route"), which was completed in 1737 and is one of the oldest highways in North America.
The portion of Route 138 north of Québec is also known as the Route des Baleines ("Whale Route"), as a particularly large number of whales can be seen on the banks of the Lower St. Lawrence River and the coast of the Gulf of St. Lawrence . This is particularly true of Tadoussac , where the over one kilometer wide tributary Rivière Saguenay is crossed by a ferry operated by the Société des traversiers du Québec (24-hour service). The road leads through the sparsely populated region of Côte-Nord via Baie-Comeau and Sept-Îles to the southern part of the Labrador Peninsula .
Until the 1990s, the eastern end of Route 138 was in Havre-Saint-Pierre , and in 1996 the road to Natashquan was extended. A second, isolated stretch extends from Vieux-Port to Blanc-Sablon , where it meets the Trans-Labrador Highway in the Newfoundland and Labrador Province . In 2011 the provincial government announced a 10-year plan to close the 425 km long gap between the two sections. Since September 26, 2013 the road from Natashquan has continued 40 km to Kegaska .
