history

Map of Tadussac around 1612

In the 16th century, Basque and Breton fishermen began trading with local Montagnais Indians. Pierre Chauvin founded the first permanent French trading post in New France in 1600 in Tadoussac . Such a trading post is now reconstructed as a museum. The bay was the starting point for research trips and the center of whaling . Tourism has developed since the middle of the 19th century. Cruise ships called the place. The magnificent "Hotel Tadoussac" from 1864 still dominates the townscape today. In 1984 the hotel was used as the setting for the film Hotel New Hampshire .

Whale watching

Tadoussac is one of the best whale watching spots in the world. In the estuary of the Saguenay, among other things, a beluga population of around 500 is resident . Depending on the season, humpback whales , fin whales , minke whales and blue whales can be observed. There are various viewpoints for whale watching on the coast of the village. Whale watching boat tours are also offered from Tadoussac or neighboring Les Escoumins. You can get really close to the whales in small rigid inflatable boats . Tadoussac is home to the Center d'interprétation des mammifères marins (CIMM) museum and research center , where the life of marine mammals is illustrated in multimedia.
