Berumerfehn is a district of the municipality of Großheide in the Aurich district in East Frisia .

The place formed an independent municipality until the Lower Saxon community reform with the associated district Westermoordorf, at that time still in the north district . On July 1, 1972, the formerly independent municipality of Berumerfehn merged with other municipalities to form the (unit) municipality of Großheide.

geography

Berumerfehn is located about ten kilometers east of the city north in a formerly extensive moor area , the Berumerfehner Moor . It is part of an extensive moor area that used to stretch roughly from Aurich to Hage . Today only parts of it are preserved in their original state, large areas were dug up for peat extraction .

The Berumerfehner Moor borders the Eternal Sea , a high moor lake, which, however, is already in the area of the municipality of Eversmeer in the district of Wittmund .

The town center is shaped by the Berumerfehn Canal , which on the one hand served to drain the moorland, but on the other hand also provided the connection by boat to the north of the city.

A forest borders the Fehnkanal, which was planned to be laid out there after the terrain was thrown off.

history

The place was founded in 1794 by the Norder Fehnkompanie. This society included citizens from the north and from Hage who wanted to ensure the supply of fuel by shedding the moor. At the time, peat was the preferred (and often the only) fuel in large parts of East Frisia. The mining right was secured by a long lease. Hunting and fishing were also permitted. The colonists laid the cows themselves and later reforested the forest.

The place was initially called Norderfehn, as it was the first (and also only) fen colony that was founded by Norder citizens. Later, the name Berumerfehn prevailed when the place was named after the nearby Berum , seat of the office Berum.

The Berumerfehner Church was built for the fen colonists in 1895 , and a large community center was added in 1997.

While Berumerfehn had 256 inhabitants in 1821, the number rose to 1278 by 1939. Shortly before the municipality reform, namely in 1970, the municipality of Berumerfehn had 1810 inhabitants. With an area of almost 22 square kilometers, it was - after Norderney - the second largest municipality in the former northern district in terms of area.

coat of arms

Blazon : In a blue field a golden boat loaded with golden tinged peat, accompanied by two golden six-pointed spur wheels placed on stakes.
The peat-laden barge recalls the time when the moor was developed. In the 20th century the peat was still being brought north on boats. As with most of the municipal coats of arms of the district, the colors blue and gold are taken from the coat of arms of the city of Norden. They should make the location of the municipality of Berumerfehn near the north clear and express their connection to this city.

Attractions

Company house

The company house of the former Fehn company is now a restaurant. There is also a Dutch gallery and the forest and moor museum in Berumerfehn . The forest is used for recreation. To a certain extent, excursions into the moor can also be undertaken on established paths. Even if the moor looks different today than it was more than 200 years ago, there are still some precautionary measures to be observed.

Economy and Transport

Apart from tourism, agriculture as well as small craft and trading companies, there are hardly any companies in Berumerfehn. Most of the residents work outside of the country, often in the cities of Norden, Aurich or Emden .

Berumerfehn is accessed via district roads in all four directions. The B 72 is only a few kilometers away. The closest train stations are those in Marienhafe ( Regional Express only ) and Norden (also InterCity ).
